Start Here: Caregivers/Parents

Your role as a caregiver (parent) to a student is so affirming to young people expressing themselves in speech, debate, theatre, and film activities! Here are the various ways caregivers engage with our association:

Adjudicating

A number of our activities, such as Speech, rely on schools providing a certain number of adjudicators equivalent to the number of entries participating.

Observing

All our contests are open to the public, subject to space considerations — at various venues we use, we are subject to what classrooms/facilities are available, and what the safe operating capacity for those are. Some events, like our State Theatre Festival, charge money for venue admission passes, used to help subsidize usage of that space. You can review our overarching calendar, and/or visit the appropriate activity’s contests page in the “Activities & Contests” menu. Due to privacy and copyright laws, we ask that any guests to our contests NOT record any presentations (whether it’s your student or otherwise).

Parents/Caregivers: BEFORE coming to a festival, ask your child for an itinerary of when and where they are performing. Especially for Speech festivals. For youth protection and privacy purposes, contest staff are unable to share where students are assigned.
