The section of the critique sheet we are questioning is the Physical Delivery. The comments do not match the score awarded. All positive comments are given with a one point deduction. According to the Speech Adjudicator Profile on page 14 of the Handbook, it states, “If low ratings are given, they must be combined with constructive suggestions for improvement.” We do not find any suggestions to warrant a score of 4 in this category. Therefore, we are asking for clarification on the Physical Delivery score.

“The transitions walking from one side to another were an effective means of transitions, and were very smooth. It added a nice touch to your overall speech. Your poster also was a nice touch to your speech. Your hand movements were subtle and also added to the overall emotion of it. All in all, well done!” Score: 4

The referee committee reviewed the complaint and contacted the adjudicator who remembered the student speaker. The adjudicator did confirm that she made a mistake and awarded a score of “4” instead of 5 in the last element. The adjudicator apologized for the error. The total score should be 25.
