Describe concern

The adjudicator deducted a point under ‘Conveying Meaning’ which her comments indicate was for the content of the piece, not the presentation of it.

In the Rules & Policies section of the High School Speech Handbook, 2022-2023, regulation 6.1.2 (Quality Literary Material) states “In some categories (Farrago and Solo Acting), the selection of material is a criterion for evaluation.” This piece in question was in the Play Acting category and therefore should not lose a point for the content of the material.

Although she used words contained in the criterion description, she actually states that the possibility of the material being “offensive…this made the characters less believable,” showing that her evaluation of the piece material was the basis for downgrading the work.

What adjudicator specifically wrote or did

Under “Conveying Meaning” she wrote:

“Be aware of the stereotypes in your piece. It can be considered offensive and this made the characters less believable. The repeat could be considered the climax-well done.”

Although she used words contained in the criterion description, she actually states that the possibility of the material being “offensive…this made the characters less believable,” showing that her evaluation of the piece material was the basis for downgrading the work.
